Through Another Lens

A WordPress.com site looking at Christian and non Christian news, culture etc, from an independent Christian viewpoint. Don't run after reading the word 'Christian'! Give it a chance, then run if you want ;-)

Prodigal Journeys: It’s not such a long road back.

Prodigal's return only a prayer away

Prodigal’s return only a prayer away

Patient: “I’ve thought about it long and hard, maybe too long and too hard. But I now believe that what holds me back, what prevents me from starting out again on the road to recovery, back to where I was before, is that the journey back seems so long and so tiring and I am already so tired.”

*pause for thought*

Patient: “I remember back when I was a healthy Christian (sounds so strange that phrase, ‘healthy Christian’). I had done Christian things for years, activities, groups, prayers, camps, preaching…I had nurtured a spiritual life and a steady relationship with Jesus. But then…but then I had a bad experience and it all went sour. I’ve never been able to get that spiritual life back, never been able to get back to that pathway again.”

*pause for thought*

Patient: “Now when I think about returning, getting back on the right road again, and I think that is something I do want to do, it just seems such a long journey back, such a long road back to where I was before. The very thought is exhausting.”

*pause*

Counsellor: “Jesus doesn’t require us to go back to where we were before, to go back to where we were before we had the bad experience and it all went sour. Jesus only asks that we start again, anew, afresh with Him from where we are now.”

*pause for thought”

Counsellor: “Your journey is not to the past, your journey is into your future with Jesus. That journey, its start is the shortest journey in the world. Your new journey with Jesus is just one prayer away.”

*pause for thought*

Counsellor: “Whatever happens on that journey, good times and bad, to start that journey is only one prayer away. Don’t think about the long journey back to where you were before, think about the shortest journey in the world, one prayer away from a new start with Jesus, a new pathway, a new road. Not the old ways, a new way.”

*pause for thought and decision*

Patient: “Dear Lord Jesus, I had a bad experience before and it shook me and my faith. It seemed like such a long way back to where I was before but now I see that my journey is not into the past but into the future with you. Please now lead me into the future and help me along that pathway. Thank you for the shortest journey, this one prayer that I pray now into my future with you. Thank you. Amen.”
